Lynster Farmers Group
In February, I’m excited to announce that we’ll be starting a field trial of HabitatSense with the Lynster Farmers Group, a dedicated farming syndicate that represents over 14,000 hectares of land. This pilot project is not just about integrating new tech on farms; it’s a commitment to understanding and protecting the natural environment that surrounds these working landscapes.
The device we’re trialling has a dual purpose -
First, it aims to reduce cases of Bovine Tuberculosis—a challenge that has long troubled farmers across the region. By monitoring key sightings of Badgers in real-time, the system will proactively work to safely deter badgers to try and reduce their interaction with cattle stock.
Second, it’s about gaining a deeper insight into the diverse wildlife present in the Winster and Lyth valleys of the Lake District. With this information, we can help farmers make informed decisions that benefit both their livestock and the natural ecosystem.
Initial focus will be in the Grange-over-sands area with other farms (highlighted in yellow) to follow
If the data supports our hopes, we plan to extend the installation of these devices across other farms within the Lynster Farmers Group, with the plan to have a network of smart devices working together across expansive fields, each contributing to a safer, healthier, and more balanced rural environment.
We’re also scheduled to meet with Defra to discuss our work and its potential implications for the wider agricultural community. This dialogue is a critical step in aligning our innovative approach with national strategies on disease control and wildlife conservation.
As we embark on this exciting venture, we’re hoping the technology gives us a glimpse into what the future holds for sustainable agriculture. By working together with the Lynster Farmers Group and engaging with regulatory bodies like Defra, we’re setting the stage for a new chapter in farming.
Stay tuned as we continue to share updates on our progress, insights from the field, and the unfolding story of how a simple idea can transform an entire farming community.
