Lynster Farmers Group (LFG) Field Trial Update
Field Trial Installation at Wilson House Farm, Cumbria
The first operational field trial of HabitatSense, deployed at Wilson House Farm in February, has successfully demonstrated the robustness and reliability of the system under challenging environmental conditions. Whilst we have seen a lower than expected number of badgers in the area, the device has provided invaluable insights into operational performance and opportunities for further enhancements.
Performance and Observations
The device has maintained consistent functionality throughout the trial, enduring substantial environmental challenges including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and temperatures as low as -2°C (average approximately 5°C).
The initial install indicated limited predator activity, prompting remote adjustments to the motion detection sensitivity and AI to leverage the improved solar charging conditions. Enhanced sensitivity resulted in increased detections of general environmental activity (distant animal eyes, ambient lighting changes, etc.) but limited badger activity.

Enhanced Data Collection and Remote Monitoring
To verify AI performance, the device has uploaded images to the cloud every 10 minutes, allowing manual cross-verification of AI-driven assessments. Additionally, facilitated by onboard unlimited cellular data, nightly live stream monitoring provided an effective means of remote verification and engagement with the operational site.
Next Steps
We will be placing camera traps at a new location over the next few weeks to confirm badger activity. Once this is in place, we will move the field trial to a new location to test in different conditions.
